Pitts-Wright Family |
Family Genealogy and 1882 Picture Below
My family in Jack County,
Texas in 1895 and 1896 |
David writes:
I'm preparing a talk at my Pitts-Wright Reunion on Sept 28. It will be our 50th consecutive reunion
held on the State Parks in Oklahoma. In the
process I'm reviewing all my old files and when you
started talking about the writing in the old years
books, I was working on 1882 tintype of my Wright family.
My grandmother Lizzie Wright (see details below)
married Nathaniel Thomas Pitts on 25 Nov. 1895 in Jack Co. Texas
My Grandmother's brother my (great Uncle) Loyd Thomas
(Stumpy) Wright married (my great Aunt) Addie LaVona (Polly) Pitts
31 Dec. 1896 in Cundiff, Jack County, Texas.
Because these two Wrights were siblings and the two
Pitts were siblings, the descedants are double cousins
It suddenly dawned on me that I probably haven't shared
that with you.
So here it is.

This is a Tintype of James Washington Wright's family, taken around 1882. Left to right: John Henry being held by James Washington, Loyd Thomas standing, William Haliburton being held by Martha Rosa, Rosa Elizabeth "Lizzie" standing. The woman standing has not been identified, but is likely Martha Rosa's mother Elizabeth Hester Wells Talley.

Misc. Notes
Pitts family book gives b. 24 Nov 1845 Troupe Co.
GA.
Pitts family book -> Possibly an earlier
marriage which produced 2 sons. The first records we have of the
Wright family start with James Washington Wright and his
birthdate. Civil war records show him to have served
as a Cavalryman with Co. I, 41st AL, joining on Dec. 27,
1862. He later transferred to Co. D, 6th regiment
Mississippi Cavalry. No record of injury is recorded
although he was listed as a prisoner of war. He was paroled
as a prisoner of war on 12 May 1865 at Gainesville Juction
Alabama. J. W. Wright of Atlee Jefferson County Oklahoma
states that he served with A. J. Wright in the Civil War from the
Spring of 1863 until the surrender of 1865. It further
states that they have known each other for 60 years, but doesn’t
go so far as to say that they are brothers. The next
trace of J. W. Wright is his marriage in Texas, the 6 missing
years are not accounted for at this time. In Nov. of
1903, the family moved to Jefferson County Indian
Territory. James was buried in the old Butcher Knife or
Atlee Cemetery. School was dismissed the day of his
funeral and businesses closed so all could attend his funeral
services. We are told a large crowd was in attendance.
He seems to have changed his birth date to enter
the service, as several records indicte both years as his date of
birth and all the census records shown above list his birth date
as 1848. Living next door to Loyd Wright, Robert H. Pitts
and Than Pitts.
Allen Wright attended his grandfather’s
(James Washington Wright’s) funeral in Atlee OK. The
funeral was held at Martha Wright’s home (Allen’s sister) and
the casket was suspended between two cane chairs.
